Michael Kenji Shinoda lahir di Agoura, California pada tanggal 11 Februari 1977. Dia bertemu gitaris Brad Delson dalam 9 kelas dan mulai menulis lagu di kamar tidurnya. Brad dan Rob Bourdon yang digunakan untuk bermain untuk berbagai band di SMA. Ini mulai Mike di jalan untuk menjadi seorang penyanyi. Mike bertemu Joseph Hahn di sekolah seni, Joe telah djing selama 5 tahun. Brad bertemu Phoenix Farrell di perguruan tinggi dan Chester Bennington adalah orang terakhir yang bergabung, pada tahun 1999. Mike dirancang untuk sampul album Hybrid Theory.
